I got some pictures of this same kind of rhododendron on the Hickory Nut Falls trail at Chimney Rock last May 2nd. Was happily surprised to see it. I thought it was Rosebay Rhododendron at first, but that blooms in early July. Nice to learn more about the different varieties of mountain flowers. Thanks!
You’re right Tim that the rosebay blooms in early July. The blossom is larger than the carolinianum and shaped like a softball. This one seems to me to be more like the native azalea family.
