I happened upon this quote the other day and I've changed my mind about three times when deciding how it can be applied in life. Maybe I should just take it at face value. Doh.

"Think all you speak, but speak not all you think. Thoughts are your own; your words are so no more." — Patrick Delany

A little self-censorship can be a good thing. Using care in choosing when to speak and what to speak may prevent hurting the feelings of another, or creating undue stress and conflict. Once our words are out, they remain forever. No amount of time or amends can ever completely heal an emotional wound.

A good friend is teaching me that, but they have also taught me how we can stifle or paralyze ourselves by becoming afraid of the misspoken word, or of the reactions of others. Like anything in this wonderful life, experience is an invaluable teacher, moderation is a key to balance and stability, and we'll have fun, fun, fun until our daddy takes the T-bird away.

Weblog potpourri. The little tour of my office encouraged others to share some stories about theirs. I heard from Lemur, Dave, and the two Susans. Maybe you would like to tell us about your office, either at work or at home. Spread the meme.

Being a rural state, West Virginia gets its fair share of road kill. Many are the opossum, raccoon, squirrel, deer, and unfortunately the occasional household pet who mistakenly wander out onto our interstate highways. I saw a new first today though. Sitting on the left side of the highway, just in the edge of the median, pretty as you please, was a rather large wild turkey. I could tell it was frightened to death by all the high speed traffic whizzing by. I hate to see that kinda thing.

Curious? If so — and no matter what about — head on over to this site. As the site's name states, this is the place to learn how stuff works. A recent visit yielded information about everything from how power door locks work, to how wine-making works (no foot stomping involved), to how sex works. The site is filled with easy-to-understand, well written articles with animated demonstrations, photos, and graphs.

IT Superhero Office      This is an honest to goodness, real life IT superhero's office. Can you imagine how many times the world has been saved from here? Well, not actually from here. I've only been in this office two months. But the one on the other side of the room was involved, well, lots. If you click the thumbnail, you can take a look at a larger image.

On the left, you'll see the smokin' hot Unix workstation. The southern hemisphere is monitored from there. In the center is the Windows desktop that makes it safe for you to sleep at night. Above the cubicle walls are clocks representing most of the major time zones. Speaking of walls, those aren't walls. Those are privacy obstructions. I've been a cube dweller my entire career. Do you know I've never had walls that go all the way up? Who do I talk to about that?

And a door. I've never had a door I could open or close. It's just "c'mon in, I'm not doing anything." I really, really would like a door. I tell ya, when I get my new job, I'm gonna have a door, and walls, and my very own whiteboard. A window too. Y'know, I want a window. Never had one. OK, I want a door, and walls, a whiteboard, and a window. And a cordless telephone. I want a ...

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky,
You'll get by...
If you smile, through your fear and sorrow
Smile, and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worth-while
If you just smile

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worth-while
If you just smile
