Thanks for the kind words Keith. I’m much like your wife, day hikes only. I’d been wanting to see the Humps for years, but it was too far away from Carver’s Gap to do as a day hike. So I was delighted to learn of this trailhead that enables you to be back home the same day.

This is one of my favorite spots on the AT. And as a history addict the Overmountain connection made it all the better. I stayed the night in the overmountain shelter before going over the Humps and on to Virginia. I always look for ways to get my wife, a day hiker only, to spots I like on the AT. Your route may provide the way to do this without convincing her to stay “just one night” in the wilderness.

Thank you Joyce. Here is a link to the book for anyone interested.

Very doable for summer with all the extra daylight. BTW, enjoyed your other recent post from the Smokies.

Hump Mountain is one of the best summits in the south in my opinion, along with Grandfather. Looks like you had a nice variety of weather, really good pictures. FYI you can also hike Hump Mt. from the AT crossing on U.S. 19E. It is a 10 mile round trip and tougher than what you did, and doesn’t include Little Hump. The only advantage is it is much easier to drive to the trail head. You did the best, shortest possible hike for this.
