The blossom is larger than the carolinianum and shaped like a softball. This one seems to me to be more like the native azalea family.

Was happily surprised to see it. I thought it was Rosebay Rhododendron at first, but that blooms in early July. Nice to learn more about the different varieties of mountain flowers. Thanks!
