Tourists, central to the livelihood of tribesmen in the Sinai desert, have stopped traveling to the area due to unrest and terror.
Sinai is Safe, an Egyptian NGO, is running a grassroots hiking campaign that aims to change the image of Sinai-specifically South Sinai-as a danger zone it is often made out to be. It aims to revive tourism that is so important to its local Bedouin communities.
The campaign was launched in 2014 as a collaboration between the local Bedouin communities, mainland Egyptians and international hikers from all over the world.
The NGO aims to challenge mainstream perceptions of the area by encouraging Nile Valley residents to explore the untamed wilderness with the Bedouin tribes.
“The narrative about the Sinai is framed by journalism and government travel advice. And unfortunately that takes away that ability of the local people to represent their own land,” an organizer based in Sinai for six years, says. “With Sinai is Safe, we’re introducing Bedouin voices into this debate, because they know the Sinai better than anybody.”
