Yeah, that loop is one of my favorite hikes up there in the land between the two wilderness areas. I also like doing this short little out and back just for overall mental health. The black balsam forest is awesome. The views from both Silvermine and Chestnut are some of the best in all the high country. It’s easy to give your brain a rest.

I’ve started and ended this hike at Devils Courthouse on the BRP, using the MST, Little Sam, Flat Laurel Creek, and Sam Knob Trails to make a loop, and I’ve made a ten miler by starting at the end of Black Balsam Road, doing the above counterclockwise, and adding Black Balsam at day’s end via the Art Loeb and the Art Loeb Spur. Always a fun hike.

Jimmy, I’ve done the same hike you mention several times. It’s one of my favorites in the WNC high country. Even that stretch along Hwy 215 is usually quite scenic.

We then walked up the road shoulder for 1/4 mile and turned left onto the MST and went across to the area you describe in this article, making our way back over to Black Balsam Rd. The section of the MST that you haven’t done (from Hwy. 215 to Chestnut Bald) was in fairly rough shape in places, but not terribly

difficult–not a lot of elevation change, as I recall, because you are basically parallel to the BRP. You should definitely do that winter hike.

Wish I could have gotten there about that time as it looks very colorful. I have been to the other knobs in the area with Black Balsam being the most recent. This looks great and have added it for Spring. Thanks as always, Jeff.
