The Forest Service uses red paint to mark its boundaries, so it may not be an old trail. There is also a trail leading down from Bennett Gap that is on the topo map.

You can also get leave the parkway earlier at the Wagon Gap Overlook – walk through the overlook and turn right on the blazed trail, which joins the MTS trail as it crosses at Pigeon Gap. You will also get some good views southward on this short trail. Really like the “grand staircase’ of rocks leading up to Green Knob.
Two years ago I went on the parkway to Pounding Mill Overlook, and the snow and ice were so heavy, you couldn’t tell there was a road! The rocky faces were completely iced over and it was so cool!

There’s something about having a trail all to yourself that makes you feel more in tuned with nature…than a summer trail overly crowded with 2 or 3 season hikers or tourists. 🙂
