It was great no marked trails, no people, and most importantly no improvements. I was there hiking this past week from Tuesday until whenever since I was going to be off work until the following Wednesday. All of the so called improvements sucked at best for lack of a better word. I’m a experienced hiker. The Cold Mountain entrance has completely changed and not for the better. There was steps all the way down to the floor of the valley. They didn’t take you past the Cannan people I’m pretty sure I would have remembered the holy roller music screaming out of speakers mounted on trees. The Pantertown trail is awful huge mud slicks everywhere. The Granny Burrells trail don’t even bother it’s awful. So many really bad places in a lot of the trails. The milage on the up to date maps don’t even bother because they must have hooked a pedometer to a crow and that’s what they record as milage. 3 pedometers between 2 people can’t be that wrong. We had planned on a number of days there and we were so disappointed we stayed over night and packed out at first light. We went on to other things in the area. I’m not impressed with what up dates that has been made. It was a lot user friendly before the do gooders got involved for their own selfish reasons.

I’ll take maintained trail I think 😉
