I have always loved it ... after today,
I can see why people hate it.
Apparently it has been too long since I
last played. Apparently I can't just pick up a club after an extended break and play
like it was last week. Apparently I simply suck.
Today was the first time I have ever
played golf where I actually feared for the safety of my playing companions. I had
absolutely no idea where the ball was going ... except to know that it would either
end up at the bottom of a pond or buried in the foot tall weeds.
If I'm hitting the ball hard and it just
isn't going straight, that's one thing. At least I'm still hitting the ball. Today,
I couldn't even say that.
I killed worms in the ground ...
scattered geese on the water ... even sent the bunnies scurrying in the woods.
(whisper: don't let PETA see this.)
What keeps the golfer coming back is
that one sweet swing ... that one whoosh of the club and thwack of striking the ball
perfectly square ... that one shot that lures you into thinking you can do it.
It finally happened on the next to last
hole when I hit a beauty ... and made a birdie. So I will be back. I left today with
that good memory, not the 187 other bad ones.
Before I go again, though, I must go
to the range to get my swing back in order. After what I did today, I'm sure no one
would let me back on their course until I do.
It is tranquil in the neighborhood
where I'm now living. Elevation is 2200 feet here in the western North Carolina mountains,
so the air is cool. This condo development is called The Oaks. When I walk, I wander from
acorn to acorn. The streets are named White Oak and Red Oak ... Chinquapin, Water Oak,
and Spanish Oak Lanes are on steep hills ... good exercise. There are several families
of ducks in and around the ponds, and I never fail to see at least a couple bunnies
everytime I'm out. I can hike across a field or through the woods ... some of the
neighbors are beginning to recognize me and wave.
The North Carolina Office of Employment
Security now has me on file. You wanna hear a weird bit of irony? In the entire
state government of North Carolina, at present there is
only one Information Technology
job posted. That job? The head honcho of the IT Division. Yep ... the Chief
Operations Officer for Information Services position is waiting to be filled ... but
that is it. Everything else is zilch, zip, nada, see ya later.
I've managed to pretty much forget the
whole divorce mess since I've been here. Not a lot I can do for the next three
months anyway, so I'm glad it isn't bothering me. Actually, being away from the situation
seems to have reduced the stress.
There's a very kind lady who could use a
few virtual hugs right about now.
Jann has been battling the
MSIE security patch from hell for nearly a week. I think by the time this PC
adventure is over, she'll be able to pass the MCSE certification exam. Let her know
you're thinking about her, 'k?
