How do you like to spend your weekends? If you enjoy outdoor
activities, especially with the gorgeous autumn weather upon us, then you'll appreciate
The National Park Foundation's Recreation.gov.
Federal land management agencies have put their information together in this one-stop
site. It allows you to search for recreation areas by state, by recreational activity,
by agency, or by map. There's information about National Parks, Forests, Wildlife
Refuges, and a whole host of other recreation areas from all across the United States.
Included among these is the
Bluestone National Scenic
River, an area of West Virginia I may soon become very familiar with. One of
the future job opportunities I may have is located in
Hinton, West Virginia, an historic community
founded when the railroad came through the area following the Civil War. The
environment there is mountainous and forested, home to three unique and exciting rivers.
Wildlife is abundant and the scenery beautiful ... a nice retreat from the hustle and
bustle of big city life.
There
is enough food in the world today for every man, woman and child to lead healthy and
productive lives. And yet, hunger afflicts one out of every seven people on earth.
24,000 people die every day from hunger and related causes.
World Food Programme is the United Nations frontline
agency in the fight against global hunger.
With hundreds of thousands of people in
northern Afghanistan's so-called "Hunger Belt" expected to run out of food, WFP is
dramatically increasing its emergency food aid deliveries into the crisis-hit country.
After its first food convoy into Afghanistan since the start of the crisis reached
Kabul without incident, WFP has intensified its deliveries. Convoys are now entering
the country from Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan as the Agency aims to deliver
over 50,000 metric tons per month enough to feed six million this winter.
However, The United Nations reports
the Taliban has seized two of six WFP food-storage facilities in the country and all
the food supplies in them. The loss of two out of six World Food Programme warehouses
will deal a significant blow to efforts aimed at doubling the amount of food supplies
reaching the Afghan people. Enter the United States. The USA has successfully dropped
more than 275,000 rations for the Afghan civilians. There are more than 2 million rations
in our supply for continued assistance.
In 2000, the USA was the most
substantial donor, with more than $796 million given to WFP activities. $174 million
in humanitarian aid was allocated to the Afghan people before September 11 this year. An
additional $320 million in aid was designated for Afghan people on October 4. President
Bush also announced America's Fund for Afghan
Children on October 11 as a way for American children to help their counterparts
across the world.
America is not a heartless behemoth
blowing Afghanistan into caves with our vast array of technological weaponry. Our
country, and our individuals are compassionate and generous. While on the one hand
chasing the evil that harmed our civilian citizens, we also recognize the plight
endured by the average family in that country. America as a whole is doing a lot. If
you as an individual wish to do more, the
World Food Programme is another
of many ways we can get back on our feet,
and help others the world over.
