Clothes never meant much to me. I hated
to shop, so I let my (soon to be) ex-wife pick out everything for me. I'm learning that
was a mistake. Our tastes couldn't be more different.
Since moving and starting a new job, I
came to realize I was in desperate need of a new wardrobe. I first noticed it when
the interviewing process began awhile back. I only had one suit ... that just wouldn't
do.
With the help of my long-distance fashion
consultant ... I picked out some slacks, shirts, ties and jackets that were made of
contemporary, comfortable fabrics that felt good on. I had self-confidence in my
appearance ... and looked better too.
Now that the interviewing is over,
I don't need the tie and jacket any more. The dress code where I'm working is
business casual. With each pay check I'm treating myself to one new outfit ... from
men's clothiers ... not from Walmart.
The old me is being shoved to the back of
the closet. I'm finding I have my own style. Too many years of apathy about what I
wore have made exploring for new apparel a learning experience, and yes, even fun.
Shopping ain't so bad after all.
Do clothes make the man? They don't
make me any smarter or kinder, more generous or loving, but picking out my own clothes
for a change makes me feel good about myself. And ... I deserve it.
I'm sure you had your own way of
remembering the anniversary this day represents. It's bigger than anything I could add,
so I'll just leave it like this. I bowed my head and spoke with God at 8:46 this
morning. 'Nuff said.

Gee ... I guess the NBA wasn't enough.
Now I find out the
Senior PGA Tour is
coming to my back yard too. Following on the heels of the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf
Classic, the SAS
Championship will be played right here outside my window September 20-22.
Watson, Irwin, Crenshaw ... man, I wonder
if the Merry Mex will be here too.
They've already started setting up the
scaffolding for the television towers. The tournament will be televised by Pax on
Friday and by CNBC on Saturday and Sunday.
I have a few ideas for a sign [wink].
Pictures when the time comes.
