I've been wondering for years what
would eventually make my computer seem slow.
When I started using this in 1998,
it was a state of the art PC. The latest from Gateway at the time, it has a 350 mhz
processor. I knew eventually something would come along that would be too much for
the machine to handle, but I didn't know what, or when.
Well, I've found it ... scripted web
site code ... in particular the newest, flashiest web ads. The processor in my PC
really gets bogged down these days rendering web sites in the browser that have a
lot of advertising, or a lot of PHP, ColdFusion, etc. The same thing happens in
code enabled email.
Even when I have the browser window
minimized and I'm working on some other task (like typing this journal entry), the
code is still executing in the background calling up another ad every 30 seconds
or so ... draining the system resources.
If I'm off the Internet, working in an
Office app or graphics editor, this is still a nicely robust computer. It rendered
1998 web sites very quickly and efficiently. Shoot, it rendered 2001 web sites
quickly and efficiently.
It has met its match, though, with all
the CSS and scripting on the web today. No, I'm not ready to give up yet and get
another. I'm not one of those who always wants the latest and greatest (obviously
... I'm still using a four year old machine), but it is frustrating.
Y'know ... maybe it's time to try a
different brower for awhile. I'm presently using IE6SP1 as my browser of choice. Anyone
out there have any performance comparisons with Netscape 7, or Mozilla, or Opera?
