Barry Bonds is a victim of timing.
Bonds will finish this weekend with
the greatest
slugging season in major league baseball history. Last night he hit homeruns 71 & 72,
surpassing the three year old record of 70 held by Mark McGwire. Bonds still has two
games remaining to increase the total, but something has been missing.
Remember the summer of 1998?
McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs waged an epic
home run derby throughout the dog days, engaging the nation, and reminding all fans
of Ruth and Maris as they chased the most glamorous record in all of sport. When
McGwire hit homer number 62 to break the previous record, members of the opposing
team congratulated him as he rounded the bases. The game was stopped for more than
10 minutes for a planned ceremony. McGwire hugged the family of Roger Maris.
For Bonds, there were no high-fives
from the other clubhouse, the game only paused for a few minutes, just long enough
for him to hug his family, and the Commissioner wasn't even in town to hold a ceremony.
Yes, a victim of timing. The record was only three years old. McGwire broke the Maris
record that stood for 37 years. Before that, Babe Ruth's record was not approached
for nearly 40 years. It seems powerful slugging has suddenly become old hat. The new
record came too soon.
And, in the blink of an eye, the
world changed just a few short weeks ago. Games are but games, achievement in sport
is simply that cowardly terror made sure Barry Bonds' record-breaking
performance will be relegated to page four of this year's biggest news. There are
more important matters to consider these days, however, I won't forget the past
week as Bonds approached his personal triumph. Congratulations Mr. Bonds. You provided
a positive emotion and new history. Thank you. I needed it.
Nice binary day today. For those who
wished me well in the job interview it didn't happen. The recruiter had to
postpone until Tuesday afternoon due to an unexpected commitment. That's OK, I took
care of some other business, including a doctor appointment. The doc and I agreed
that I'm doing pretty well.
I hope everyone participated in
Grey Day today. If you didn't, it really is a
notable cause, support for copyrights. Every October 1st is
Grey Day, so you have
plenty of time to get ready for next year. In my view, the definitive resource for
copyright information on the web is today's Aortal link. Very important. Take a look.
