Tom Brokaw: Don't do anything dumb.

     David Bloom: You mean dumber?

I looked forward to late night — eastern U.S. time. It was usually around 11PM here when David Bloom would come on the air at dawn, live on MSNBC, to give his daily report from the front in Iraq.

He helped me understand what it was like to be on the ground, in the desert, in the midst of war. Aggressive, a story teller, human ... he brought the war into my living room in an objective, yet heartfelt way.

David Bloom died last night ... a pulmonary embolism.

The grief experienced by family and friends of brave service men and women whose loved ones have given the ultimate sacrifice to make our homes safer and more secure must be excruciating. So too for the families of the embedded journalists.

I only knew David Bloom from my 13" TV screen. His reports were riveting. I will miss him very much, and can't imagine the sadness of his beautiful family, and friends at NBC.

Thank you sir ... for your grace ... for your love of your work.
