Stand
for Children enables citizens who value children to come together and create a
strong, effective grassroots voice. The kind of voice that can ensure all children
have the opportunity to grow up healthy, educated, and safe.
Each year since 1996, on or about June
1st, local events are held around the country to support Stand for Children's mission.
Collectively, these events are known as Stand
for Children Day.
A theme is established each year with 2002
focused on strengthening America by investing in early education. Our nation's major
federal child care program, the Child
Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG), is being re-authorized
this year ... as it is every five years.
There are many things we can do to take
an active role in the early education of our nation's children including participation in
a Stand for Children Day event or joining Stand to add to the collective voice. A
quick and simple way to do something right away is to sign the
Early
Education Investments Petition, located on their
web site. This petition calls on Congress to increase funding for the CCDBG.
Don't be a bystander. Be a stander ...
by taking a Stand for Children.
New York City ... America ... concluded one
chapter of the recovery from September 11th today, and began another.
The ceremony closing the cleanup effort
at Ground Zero was understated, therefore appropriate and moving. Imagery did all
the talking that was necessary.
My dominant feeling was one of gratitude.
Gratitude for the bravery of the men and women in emergency services.
Gratitude that Americans opened their collective hearts from the exact moment.
Gratitude that a military response was made ... appropriately and responsibly.
Gratitude at the dedication of those who persisted in recovery.
Gratitude at the generosity of Americans in providing assistance for victim's
families through the Red Cross and other agencies.
Gratitude that I don't have to be a victim's loved one still seeking closure.
Gratitude that through it all my loved ones remain safe ... and able to be grateful.
America will move on, as will New York City.
There is a resilience about us ... an indomitable spirit that is difficult to describe,
but that Americans feel instinctively. We are already a better nation.
We may move on, but most notably, what
perhaps sets us apart was found on a lone, simple banner hanging from the hull of the
former World Trade Center: WE WILL NEVER FORGET
