Discover Oklahoma: State’s trails are a hiker’s paradise

What is it about autumn weather that makes us stir about? Could it be something within all creatures that causes us to begin getting ready for the change of seasons? Squirrels store supplies for the winter, but we as humans desire possibly a little food for the soul, stocking up for the coming gray winter days that will keep us housebound too long.

This seasonal burst of energy works quite well in our favor, because fall is perhaps the best season for outdoor activity. The heat of the summer is a thing of the past, and now the sun-lit days are warm enough to be pleasant and not so cool as to be uncomfortable. The wildlife is active, the leaves are changing, and the air is full of the smells of autumn.

Hiking Oklahoma’s trails is a wonderful way to welcome in fall and experience the outdoors a few steps ahead of winter’s sometimes overwhelming chill.

Most trails throughout Oklahoma are broken into three categories: beginning, intermediate and expert. You can find extensive lists of trails in all three categories by going to the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department’s official website, www.travelok.com.

One of my favorite Oklahoma places is the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, but you can find several other fine hiking destinations here…
