Mechanicsburg man honored on hiking all 798 miles of Pennsylvania State Forest hiking trails

Richard “Dick” Shelly, 76, of Mechanicsburg, received the prestigious State Forest Trails Award at the recent annual meeting of the Keystone Trails Association at Doubling Gap Center, Newville. He earned the award by hiking all 798 miles of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry’s 18 state forest hiking trails.

The award is a collaboration between the association and the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which manages the state forests of the state.

The Keystone Trails Association is a federation of membership organizations and individuals dedicated to providing, preserving, protecting and promoting recreational hiking trails and hiking opportunities in Pennsylvania, and to representing and advocating the interests and concerns of the Pennsylvania hiking community.

The Keystone Trails Association 100-Mile Trail Challenge recognizes hikers that complete 100 miles or more of eligible Pennsylvania hiking trails in a designated period of time. In 2015, the 100-Mile Trail Challenge must be completed between September 1, 2014 and August 31, 2015. The State Forest Trails Award is the ultimate of the challenges.
