People are often surprised to learn that Susan Wefald, a former North Dakota Public Service Commissioner and violinist with the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony, is also an avid hiker.
She hikes for fun, exercise and to relieve stress. She even seeks out hiking trails while on vacation.
And after retiring in December 2008 after 16 years as a member of the Public Service Commission, Wefald spent the next two-and-a-half years hiking and writing about it.
The North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies published her book, “Spectacular North Dakota Hikes, Bring the Dog,” last fall. It’s a detailed guide to 50 hiking trails in the state and Wefald has highlighted 29 of what she considers the best trails.
The book contains information like the length of the trails, where they’re located, whether dogs are allowed and what you can expect along the way. She offers tips for where to eat lunch and ideas about what to pack because most trails are in areas where there are no nearby restaurants.
